The Health Benefits of Exercise
We’ve all been told about the health benefits of exercising. Health and physical fitness go together like love and romance. It is great for your mind, body and soul. For instance, exercising releases endorphins in your brain, making you feel great after physical activity. These endorphins positively affect your mood and can leave you feeling accomplished and happier.
Taking steps to improve your body image can also make you feel more confident and proud that you are taking charge of your health. I know, I know, I can hear it now; but I’m in pain all the time or I am short of breath how can I possible exercise I can’t even walk from the couch to the refrigerator?
Simple Ways to Incorporate Fitness and Exercise
- Park further away from the grocery store.
- Carry the groceries out instead of using the cart.
- Take a walk around the block in your neighborhood.
- Use the stairs when possible instead or an elevator or escalator.
- Mow the lawn, weed the flower bed, rake the leaves.
Before you commit to early morning work outs or late-night swims, understand your personal biorhythms and when you feel at your best.
For example, if you are an early bird, doing your exercise in the morning would make sense.
So, you’re a night owl, maybe hitting an evening dance class or stopping at the gym on the way home from work would be more beneficial than going on the way to work. Everyone is different. You will be more likely to stick to your program if you schedule it to fit your preference.
I personally like to go early in the morning before work, then come home have breakfast and a shower. It is invigorating, boost my metabolism and generally gives me energy all morning and I don’t get hungry before lunch.
Jazz Up Your Workouts
As You gain more stamina and are able you will be more successful at improving your health if you can incorporate strength training, cardiovascular workouts and stretching routines into the process. If you simply repeat the same, monotonous workout, your muscles and tissues will become accustomed to the same exercises and you may even hit a plateau in your weight loss.
There is significant evidence showing that “muscle confusion” is effective in helping people get health and lose weight quicker. This concept is achieved by doing a variety of different exercises for the duration of the workout.
Think of unusual exercise ideas, step out of your comfort zone and be creative. Try ballroom dancing or ice-skating. Both are great for helping to improve your balance and muscle coordination.
Signing up for a dance class at your local community center is a great way to incorporate some new cardio or you could do what I do when you can’t go to the gym.
Can you comment to 12 minutes a day?
What if I told you there was a program you could do for just 12 minutes a day, where you could start from where you are; even if you can walk from the couch to fridge without getting out of breath, would you at least try it?
This program is set up so you do 4 minutes of cardio, then rest for a minute, 4 more minutes, rest a minute, then the last 4 minutes. Do the first set of exercises 3 times a week, then work your way up, after you start getting more physically fit you can move on to the other sets available on the CD to increase your fitness.
I used the PACE program from Dr. Sears, he developed this program so that anybody can start the program no matter where they are physically. Even if you have arthritis, bad knees, back pain, neck pain, or can’t bend over to tie your shoes. This is where I was after back surgery, but now I can go to the gym and do strength training, work out on the Arc Trainer, walk 2 miles on the indoor track. I have lost 43 pounds and I generally feel better.
